Maurten's Gel 100 vs. Gel 160

image

By The Feed.

Maurten is back with another new and exciting product! This time it's the Gel 160 – a gel using the same hydrogel technology to deliver 40g of carbohydrates in just one serving. We do a deep dive to compare their two offerings for you.

The Gel 100 was a game-changer for the gel. It utilized the unique hydrogel tech from Maurten to encapsulate carbs for easier absorption and digestion. However, athletes wanted more.

The growing strategy of higher carbohydrate gels has been all the rage over the last few years because it allows you to take in more carbohydrates without carrying so many gels.

You can think of the Gel 160 as the older sibling to the Gel 100. They are nearly identical in taste, texture, and flavor (still flavorless). They even follow the same fructose to glucose ratio of 0.8:1! However, in order to get the additional 15g of carbohydrates in the Gel 160 the packaging needed to be slightly larger. The only small difference you will see is an increase in overall weight by 25 grams.

The Gel 160 is already proving to be game-changing for several of our High Performance Athletes with some big names in the sports of triathlon and cycling taking a quick liking to the product. The main feedback we are hearing is that they love that they can take just two Gel 160’s per hour plus a drink mix to push them well above 100g of carbohydrates per hour!

Below, we will dive into a small side-by-side comparison of the key differences between the gels!

Gel 100

  • Serving size: 1 x 40g gel
  • Calories: 100
  • Carbohydrates: 25g
  • Sodium: 20mg

Gel 160

  • Serving size: 1 x 65 gel
  • Calories: 160
  • Carbohydrates: 40g
  • Sodium: 30mg

If you are new to the space of high-carb fueling during longer duration, high intensity workouts and race we recommend starting with the Gel 100 to train your gut to handle higher amounts of carbsl. However, after you have trained your gut we recommend giving the Gel 160 a try!
