What we think

Maurten is changing the game of sports nutrition with its new hydrogel technology.

Are you prone to an upset stomach, cringe at most gels, or just struggle to improve carbohydrate consumption?

Other gels on the market contain only simple carbohydrates which can cause an upset stomach. This is due to a high concentration of sugar emptying into the intestines too quickly with nothing to slow it down. Not Maurten.

Why do we love it?

From a technical perspective, traditional gels are water and carbohydrates simply mixed into syrups, often containing added flavors and preservatives. The GEL 100 is completely different. It’s a biopolymer matrix filled with a unique blend of fructose and glucose (ratio of 0.8:1) which –as we discuss often– enables uptake of up to 100 grams of carbohydrates per hour.

Maurten has solved this problem by creating a gel that contains its unique hydrogel technology, which encapsulates those simple carbohydrates and enables smooth transportation into the intestine where water, salt, and carbohydrates are absorbed.

This is slightly different from their drink mix, which requires the acidity of the stomach to form the hydrogel; the Maurten Gel 100 contains an already formed hydrogel and can be taken without water.

What does it taste like?

When it comes to taste, Maurten has it right. Other gels are known for being extremely sweet, syrupy or even chemical tasting. Often times, the taste is so bad that it's hard to get them down without cringing or maybe gagging.

Since Maurten gels use only a handful of natural ingredients, their gels have a mildly sweet, natural flavor that is not overpowering and goes down easy. I like to describe it as a light maple syrup or agave nectar.

What's in it?

The GEL 100 is built by harnessing natural hydrogel technology and built with six natural ingredients:

  • Water
  • Glucose
  • Fructose
  • Calcium Carbonate
  • Gluconic acid
  • Sodium Alginate.

It doesn’t contain any colorants or preservatives and comes in 40g servings that contain 60% carbohydrates (25g of carbs): a high weight-to-energy ratio.

Maurten Gel does NOT need water to consume it, whereas other gels do require that you also drink water to help digest them.

Maurten Gel contains electrolytes in the form of 20mg of Sodium per Gel.
