Summer is upon us and that means the temperature is on the rise! To make sure the summer heat doesn't get in the way of your training make sure you stay properly hydrated and get enough calories. If you feel like your appetite is a bit low when it's hot try eating smaller meals throughout the day as opposed to three larger meals. The breaking down and digesting of food in the body is an exothermic reaction, which means energy (or heat) is released while foods are being broken down into smaller molecules. This type of reaction will cause a slight increase in body temperature. Because your body temperature rises slightly as you digest food your appetite might be naturally suppressed due to the external heat, and you might feel uncomfortable eating larger meals. If you are still training as normal you will need to make sure you are still getting the right amount of calories. Smoothies and shakes are a great way to get calories in summer heat! It is much easier to become dehydrated in the summer and once you're slightly dehydrated your organs and muscles in the body will not function to their best ability. Make sure you are drinking water throughout the day and especially at meals. Adding some salt or electrolyte tablets to your water will help replace the salt that your body needs and loses through sweat. Finding the right things to eat and drink in the heat isn't always easy, but we have a few summer favorites that we wanted to share!
