Summer Snacks and Hydration

Summer is upon us and that means the temperature is on the rise! To make sure the summer heat doesn't get in the way of your training make sure you stay properly hydrated and get enough calories. If you feel like your appetite is a bit low when it's hot try eating smaller meals throughout the day as opposed to three larger meals. The breaking down and digesting of food in the body is an exothermic reaction, which means energy (or heat) is released while foods are being broken down into smaller molecules.  This type of reaction will cause a slight increase in body temperature. Because your body temperature rises slightly as you digest food your appetite might be naturally suppressed due to the external heat, and you might feel uncomfortable eating larger meals. If you are still training as normal you will need to make sure you are still getting the right amount of calories. Smoothies and shakes are a great way to get calories in summer heat! It is much easier to become dehydrated in the summer and once you're slightly dehydrated your organs and muscles in the body will not function to their best ability.  Make sure you are drinking water throughout the day and especially at meals. Adding some salt or electrolyte tablets to your water will help replace the salt that your body needs and loses through sweat. Finding the right things to eat and drink in the heat isn't always easy, but we have a few summer favorites that we wanted to share!

Kill Cliff Cold Brew:

Don't let the heat make you give up your coffee! This convenient and delicious cold brew gives you just what you need to get your morning started off right.

    Nuun All Day Hydration:

Pop one of these tablets in your water and you will be sure to stay hydrated throughout the day. These tablets come in a convenient tube that you can throw in your gym bag or purse!

      SFH Pure Whey Single Serve:

Protein shakes are a staple for us in the summer, and SFH is a clean and delicious whey protein powder that will keep you fueled throughout the day. Tastes great in just water, but our favorite way to use SFH in the summer is in a smoothie with milk, berries, and a handful of ice and spinach.

        Steve's Paleo Krunch:

Looking for a delicious snack with a bit of crunch? Then look no further. Steve's Paleo Krunch is one of our favorite summer-time treats as it goes great with milk, almond milk or coconut milk!

          Barnana Mini:

Who doesn't love fruit in the summer? This super potassium snack is dehydrated bananas which are 100% organic, 100% wheat-free, 100% vegan, totally raw and packed with nutrients. They come in a resealable pack so they are great to keep in your gym bag!
