What Is Open Water Swimming?

Rivers, lakes, seas, oceans and channels are the venues that make a swim an open water swim, at any distance from a short lake crossing to the 10 kilometer Olympic marathon.

What changes is everything a pool supplies without being noticed, the line on the floor, the wall every 25 meters, the lane rope keeping other swimmers off. Take those away and the skills built on them only half work. Cold water removes one more before a swimmer has taken a stroke.

What Cold Water Does in the First Three Minutes

Cold shock comes from skin temperature falling fast. It arrives within seconds of entry, long before the core has cooled. The first reflex is a gasp. Heart rate and blood pressure jump, and breathing runs away on its own. Below roughly 15 degrees Celsius the time a swimmer can go without breathing falls from 60 to 90 seconds to a few.

That first response passes in under five minutes and usually inside one. The stages after it put superficial neuromuscular cooling at about three minutes and hypothermia at about thirty, with a distinct collapse risk around a rescue. The first two or three minutes are the dangerous window in that sequence.

Repeated immersion blunts the response. A 2024 systematic review puts habituation at roughly four immersions, and controlled work has produced measurable change inside a single day. The reflex that does not habituate is the gasp itself. Measured inside the first ten seconds, the involuntary first breath was statistically unchanged between a first immersion and a seventh.

The RNLI treats anything below 15 degrees Celsius as cold water and records the average sea temperature around the UK and Ireland as 12 degrees. Its advice to anyone who ends up in cold water is to float first, head tilted back with the ears submerged and the breathing relaxed, before trying to swim. In competition the temperature is regulated instead, with a wetsuit mandatory below 18 degrees Celsius and optional at or above.

Swimming Without a Wall or a Lane

A pool swimmer touches a wall every 25 or 50 meters and does not count it as a rest. One swimmer admitted he had been grabbing onto something every 25 yards for years without noticing, and that continuous swimming was the habit he then had to build.

At the top of the sport the absence adds up to two hours of unbroken work. The 2025 world 10 kilometer title went to Florian Wellbrock in 1:59:55.5, with 15 seconds covering the first four finishers. Under the competition rules an athlete may not take support from any fixed or floating object, in distress excepted.

The lane rope goes too, so contact stops being an accident and becomes part of the race. World Aquatics bans interference for unfair advantage, pacing off a boat or a non-competitor, plus intentional pushing, pulling or holding, but nowhere in its open water rules does it ban swimming in another athlete’s wake.

Sitting directly on another swimmer’s feet cuts passive drag by 21% on the toes and 20% at half a meter back. Slide out to the side and the benefit is 6 or 7%. Over 400 meters a trained triathlete drafting is around 3% faster, and the elite rule requiring trimmed fingernails and no jewelry exists because swimmers make contact.

Water Quality, Chop and Visibility

The water itself is a variable a pool removes. Chop breaks a breathing pattern that was symmetrical by drill, so bilateral breathing becomes a way of seeing more of the course and compensating for a swell on one side. Visibility runs out, often within a few meters, taking the line and the swimmer’s own hand entry with it. Race organizers measure the water quality beforehand. The 2025 world 10 kilometer race in Singapore was postponed by five and a half hours after E. coli readings exceeded the acceptable level, then run once repeat samples came back inside limits.

How to Sight in Open Water

Sighting has no equivalent in a pool, and swimmers name it unprompted as the hardest thing to learn. The move is a single lift that brings the goggles above the water, timed to the lead arm.

As that arm enters, the chin starts to tilt up. A slight press down as it begins its stroke raises the top of the head and the eyes above the surface, not the mouth. The eyes take a snapshot before the face rolls straight into the breath on the other side, with the head back down as the next arm swings over. Arching the back and kicking a little harder through the lift keeps the legs from dropping.

The instruction that surprises pool swimmers is to stop looking properly. Recognizing contrast is enough, a dark blob of trees on a hill or an orange smear where the buoy is. Locking focus on a shape takes longer than the sight is worth, so the brain processes the image with the face back in the water.

Each lift costs speed, because when the head comes up the hips sink behind it and drag rises. That cost is the reason the frequency is argued about at all, and no governing body or published study has ever attached a number to it.

Racing 10 Kilometers in Open Water

The Olympic event is a 10 kilometer marathon swim, in the program since Beijing 2008. Its athletes peak later than pool swimmers do, at about 28.9 years for men and 27.4 for women, which comes from the years of racing the discipline requires.

Swimmers start from a platform with 60 centimeters of marked space each, which is why the first few hundred meters are physical. They wear two timing transponders because one gets knocked off, eat only at a fixed pontoon from a pole no longer than 5 meters, and carry no packaged nutrition. Every athlete is inspected by the medical team on the way out of the water.

In the Seine at Paris 2024, on a six-lap course between two bridges with the current running one way out and back the other, Florian Wellbrock swam wide around the bend into the final lap and went from second to seventh. He was the defending Olympic champion and the reigning world champion, and he did not recover a podium place in the 1.67 kilometers that were left.

How Often Should You Sight?

Two credentialed coaches give opposite answers to that. A Masters swimming coach tells swimmers to build up to 20 or 30 strokes between sights, and to sight only when it is necessary rather than because it is comforting. A triathlon coach starts swimmers at one sight every 8 to 12 strokes, then adds bursts of two or three consecutive sights, to locate and correct, before swimming straight for 20 to 30 seconds.

They agree completely on the physics of the lift and split on the diagnosis. One position treats frequent sighting as the cure for swimming crooked, where the other treats it as the evidence of it and argues that a swimmer who drifts after a few strokes should find the cause instead. That cause is usually a head angled slightly off center by neck tension, since the spine and legs follow wherever the head points.

Both positions allow one shortcut, sighting off other swimmers heading the same direction and letting their head lifts do the work. The question stays open. What a wider line costs against what the extra lifts cost has never been measured.
