What Is Cyclocross?

A cyclocross race sends riders around a closed circuit of grass, mud and sand, over obstacles that force them off the bike to run carrying it. The season runs from September to February, the laps are short, 2.5 to 3.5 km, and at least 90% of the circuit has to be rideable.

The elite men’s race lasts 60 minutes, and nobody knows the distance until the lap count is announced at the end of the second lap. Tires may not exceed 33 mm, a ceiling gravel racing never had.

What Counts as an Obstacle in Cyclocross

The governing body defines an obstacle by what the rider does. In the current regulations an obstacle means any part of the course where riders are likely, though not required, to dismount. A course may have no more than six. The only artificial ones permitted are planks, steps and sand pits dug for the race. Nothing may stand higher than 40 cm or run longer than 80 meters, and all of them together may not exceed a tenth of the lap.

The plank rule is written out in unusual detail. A course gets one plank section, and that section is two planks on a straight, no less than 4 meters apart and no more than 6. They must be solid the whole way up, of equal height and made of something other than metal. They must span the entire width of the course. Four meters is too short to get back on the bike between them. Six is too long to jump both at once. The gap is engineered to produce a dismount, a few strides carrying the bike and a remount.

It had to be engineered because riders kept finding a way around it. Danny De Bie bunnyhopped the barriers on his way to the 1989 world title. Course designers answered by pairing them, and Sven Nys, who came from BMX, went on hopping them anyway. Since 2018 the obstacles on the elite men’s and elite women’s courses have had to be identical, which ended the practice of softening one of the two.

Where Cyclocross Came From

Daniel Gousseau, a French army private who later became secretary-general of the French cycling federation, organized the first French national championship in 1902. The story usually told alongside that date, of soldiers racing cross-country to the next town and steering by the church steeple, is tradition, and it traces to a magazine feature from the 1990s. What is documented is what the sport was for. Octave Lapize credited his 1910 Tour de France win to his winter cyclocross training, and national championships followed in Belgium the same year, Switzerland in 1912 and Italy by 1930.

The first world championship took place in Paris in 1950 and went to Jean Robic. Flanders and the Netherlands became the strongholds. Erik De Vlaeminck’s seven elite men’s titles were the record for 53 years, until Mathieu van der Poel took an eighth at Hulst in 2026. Marianne Vos has eight in the women’s race. The championship left Europe for the first time in 2013, for Louisville, Kentucky. Cyclocross is not on the Olympic program.

Why the Bike Is Built to Be Carried

Put a cyclocross frame beside a road frame and the top tube is the first difference. Road bikes slope theirs steeply toward the seat. Cyclocross bikes keep theirs close to horizontal and often flatten or oval the underside, because the tube has to rest on a collarbone for the length of a run-up. The derailleur cables run along the top of that tube instead of under the bottom bracket, out of the mud and out from under the shoulder.

Riders adjust the controls for the same moment. Bottom brackets have come down in recent designs, and the remount rather than ground clearance is the reason. Many swap the brakes so the right lever works the front. That leaves the left hand to scrub speed on the approach while the right is already reaching for the frame.

The footwear follows the running. Cyclocross shoes are mountain bike shoes, with the cleat recessed into a treaded sole so the rider can run in them, and many thread in two screw-in toe spikes of the kind used on soccer boots. One-piece skinsuits are standard partly because a separate jersey rides up and bares the torso the moment the bike goes on the shoulder.

Tires are capped at 33 mm and the bike at 6.8 kg, matching the road minimum. Within that, tubulars have kept a following the road gave up. A tubular is glued to the rim with no inner tube to pinch, so it can be run at 22 to 40 psi on soft ground without flatting, and measured pressures at a national championship have come in around 26 to 30 psi. Dry courses take small closely spaced knobs. Mud courses take taller ones set far apart so the mud falls out of the gaps.

The Pit

The mud that forces a dismount also ruins the drivetrain, so riders keep a second bike. A double pit is compulsory at the world championships, World Cup rounds, continental and national championships and class 1 events, which gives riders two chances a lap to swap. At that level the pit runs at least 70 meters with 15 boxes of 4 meters. The organizer has to supply ten high-pressure cleaners, and riders’ own pressure washers are banned. A rider may enter the pit lane only to change a bike or a wheel, may not hand equipment to another rider and must make the change at one point in the lane. Pits are placed on the right of the course, because most riders step off to the left.

How Hard Cyclocross Is on the Body

A cyclocross race loads the body the way running does. Insole sensors worn by 25 racers measured the landing off a flat barrier at 2.9 times bodyweight at peak and 2.3 on average, the range reported for running and hopping. Every cyclocross-specific movement tested came out measurably above both seated and standing pedaling. The downhill run-up produced 12 loading cycles in a single pass. At one national championship 6.7% of 534 riders were injured, lacerations first at 38% and the knee most often involved.

None of it is in the power file. Current methods underestimate both intensity and energy cost, because a power meter cannot see the isometric work of carrying a bike or damping vibration through the arms.

Data from 329 riders across five world championships found a measurable lap effect in 8 of 10 races, with the fast-start pattern the most likely and overtakes falling away lap by lap. The rulebook protects that opening phase. A start has to be on firm ground, preferably surfaced road, at least 150 meters long and 6 meters wide, straight and without a descent.

The field then thins by rule. A rider whose lap time falls 80% behind the leader’s first lap is pulled out at the end of that lap, in a marked zone, and this is compulsory at the world championships and World Cup rounds. Lapped riders finish the lap they were caught in and leave the same way.

What a spectator sees from the tape is a rider coming out of a corner too fast, right hand off the bar, left foot swinging behind the saddle, the bike going up onto the shoulder for two planks and four strides, then dropped back under the rider before the next corner. The same rider comes past six or seven more times before the bell rings the last lap.
