Garmin Forerunner 170

Product Description

You've been running long enough to know that basic pace-and-distance data isn't enough anymore. You want to know if you're actually getting fitter, when to push and when to back off, and whether your training is building toward something or just accumulating miles. That gap between "running watch" and "real training tool" used to cost you. Not anymore.

The Garmin Forerunner 170 brings the full Garmin training stack — the same tools trusted by serious runners at every level — to a clean, lightweight AMOLED smartwatch at $299.

Training Readiness – Every morning the Forerunner 170 tells you exactly how ready your body is to train, based on your sleep quality, recovery time, heart rate variability, and recent load. No more guessing. You show up knowing whether today is a hard effort or an easy spin.

Wrist-Based Running Power and Dynamics – The Forerunner 170 measures your running power output from your wrist — no external pod required. It also captures running dynamics like cadence and ground contact time, giving you the feedback a coach would give you. Use it to run more efficiently and reduce injury risk over time.

Quick Workouts: Structured Training on Demand – Tap your wrist, pick an intensity and a duration, and the watch generates a structured workout tailored to your current fitness level. It's not a generic plan — it's built around your actual history and how recovered you are right now.

Long Battery Life With up to 10 days of battery in smartwatch mode and 20 hours of GPS, the Forerunner 170 is built to keep up without constant charging. Whether you're prepping for your first half marathon or dialing in your fall race, this is the watch that grows with you.

How to Use the Garmin Forerunner 170

Daily wear: Keep it on around the clock. The watch tracks sleep, HRV, Body Battery, and stress continuously, feeding the Training Readiness score that guides your next session.

Pre-run: Check your Training Readiness score and daily suggested workout before you head out. Or hit Quick Workouts, choose your time and intensity, and go.

Post-run: Review your Training Status — specifically your Training Load, Load Ratio, and Workout Benefit score — to understand how the effort fit your current training arc.

Pro tip: Sync the Forerunner 170 with Garmin Connect to set up a Garmin Coach plan. The adaptive plans adjust daily based on how you're recovering, not just what's on the calendar.

Runners who train across disciplines will appreciate the addition of Garmin Cycling Coach and full power-meter support — features that didn't exist on entry-level Garmin watches until now.

Stop settling for a watch that just records your runs. Start training with one that actually guides them.

The Forerunner 170 is Garmin's entry/mid-range GPS running smartwatch, released May 2026. It delivers the full modern Garmin training stack — including Training Readiness, wrist-based Running Power, Running Dynamics, and Garmin Cycling Coach — in a lightweight 43mm AMOLED watch at $299.99. It is the direct successor to the Forerunner 165 and sits between the Forerunner 70 and the Forerunner 570 in Garmin's 2026 lineup.

In smartwatch mode, the Forerunner 170 lasts up to 10 days (or approximately 4 days with the always-on display active). In GPS mode it delivers up to 20 hours of tracking, and the Forerunner 170 Music edition adds up to 7.5 hours of GPS plus music playback before needing a charge.

Training Readiness is a Garmin metric that looks at your sleep quality, recovery time, Heart Rate Variability status, Body Battery level, and recent training load to give you a single daily score telling you how prepared your body is to train hard. It is one of the key features that separates the Forerunner 170 from the previous Forerunner 165, which did not include it, and it helps you avoid overtraining or underperforming by training at the right intensity on the right days.

The standard Forerunner 170 ($299.99) does not have onboard music storage. The Forerunner 170 Music ($349.99) adds 4GB of onboard storage, Wi-Fi for music downloads, and offline playback support for Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer. Both versions include Garmin Pay and all the same training and health features.

The Forerunner 170 includes 80+ built-in sport profiles covering running (road, trail, treadmill, track, ultra), cycling (road, MTB, gravel, indoor), swimming (pool and openwater), strength training, HIIT, yoga, hiking, paddle sports, winter sports, team sports, and more. Notably, it includes the Openwater Swim and Floor Climb profiles that the Forerunner 70 does not offer.
