How it works: 

Every woman knows that hormonal fluctuations can impact her performance. What we might not know is exactly why.

It turns out that higher levels of estrogen and progesterone mean that available plasma volume can drop by 8%. This reduces the oxygen available during aerobic metabolism when you’re exercising, meaning you may fatigue faster and have less power and endurance. On top of this, estrogen reduces the availability of carbohydrates and increases the amount of fat used for fuel, making high-intensity performance more difficult. Elevated progesterone raises core temperature by 0.5ºC, increasing sodium losses and muscle breakdown while also reducing the body’s ability to rebuild muscle.
