We spoke with Richard Smith, founder and CEO, about his team's process for developing and launching this new product.
The Feed: So, the new flavor is Cinnamon Vanilla and Vegan friendly. What made you want to launch into the Vegan world?
Richard Smith: The first time someone told me they couldn't use our original recovery drink because it contained dairy protein, my heart sank & I felt like I had failed that person. Fluid has always been about inclusion not exclusion. We wanted to make a product that removed dairy and any other common food allergy in an effort to be more inclusive for all athletes. The new flavor is free from dairy, soy, gluten, and entirely Vegan friendly.
TF: How is this different from the original Fluid recovery products?
RS: We use whey isolate protein in the original products for it's fantastic bioavailability and the fact that it is lactose-free. In Cinnamon Vanilla, we swapped out the whey for a non-GMO protein from yellow peas, making the foundation both dairy and soy free. We also adjusted the carb protein ratio from 4:1 to 3:1 to bolster the protein content and upped the glutamine from 2500 mg to 3000 mg to ensure a therapeutic dose.
TF: How does pea protein compare to whey protein?
RS: On paper pea protein has a very similar amino acid profile to whey, rich in branched-chain amino acid's and glutamtic acid, both great for muscle repair. Pea protein also digests quickly, similar to whey protein, making them both ideal for post workout recovery.
TF: Is this product only for vegans?
RS: This product is for anyone who wants a delicious post workout treat that will help them recover better, recover faster, and be strong again tomorrow
. So no you don't have to be Vegan to enjoy it, but my vegan friends say plant-powered is the way to go. :)
TF: How much do recovery drinks really help? Are they all that necessary?
RS: Our customers tell us all the time "that stuff works! " usually because they run out for a little bit, continue training or hitting the gym, and discover how much more sore they are. This is an indication of increased inflammation and can result in reduced efforts during subsequent workouts. So if you care about your progress or maximizing the gains of training - yes recovery drinks are absolutely critical
TF: Some people think vegan products don't taste good, what does this one taste like?
RS: Honestly, it tastes just like my grandmother’s homemade Horchata. We use lots of ground cinnamon, natural vanilla, and real cane sugar. The result is almost too good to be true, but you’ll have to try it for yourself & let us know what you think!
